Melbourne is one of those tracks where setup matters more than raw downforce, and Red Bull nailed the balance this weekend. Max won pole, won the race, and set the fastest lap. Twenty-six points and a championship lead heading to Suzuka.

The qualifying lap#

Watching Max’s pole lap on the team radio replay was a thing of beauty. He kept saying “no grip” through Q2, then dialled up the front wing one click and went 0.4s faster on his first Q3 run. That’s the difference between a driver who can adapt and one who sets up the car for one specific scenario.

Strategy#

Weather forecast was cloudy, with rain probability climbing through the afternoon. Red Bull went two-stop on hard–medium–medium, which gave Max enough flexibility to manage the rear tyres if it had rained. McLaren went three-stop and lost ground when their second pit window collapsed under VSC.

The McLaren response#

Norris recovered from a bad start to finish P3. McLaren’s race pace looked competitive but not dominant — they’re going to be in this fight all season.

Notes#

  • Albert Park is so much better with the recent layout changes — three DRS zones is the right amount.
  • Williams looking strong in the midfield — Sainz scored P7. Their long-stint pace was a positive sign.
  • Fastest lap battle: Hamilton tried to grab the bonus point on lap 56 but his soft tyres didn’t have it.
